Film&Screen Saturday Club

Across the UK, the National Saturday Club gives 13 - 16 year olds the opportunity to study subjects they love for free at their local university, college or cultural institution. Saturday Clubs are currently offered in six subjects: Art&Design, Craft&Making, Fashion&Business, Film&Screen, Performance&Theatre, Science&Engineering, Society&Change and Writing&Talking.

With a particular focus on engaging young people from underrepresented communities, the National Saturday Club’s established model of extracurricular education has proven impact. The programme offers a transformational opportunity to build skills, develop confidence and discover pathways to further study and future careers.

In January 2025, we launched a new Film&Screen Saturday Club at Queen’s Hall. The club was an instant success with 13 young people signing up to work with Filmmaking Tutor, Addison Keen, to learn about many different aspects of film making.

Over the year, members explored every stage of filmmaking – from early scriptwriting and camera workshops to sound design and post-production – working together to bring their original ideas to life on screen. They also took part in a masterclass on directing for film and television, focusing on visual storytelling and how directors work with actors.

The young people worked as a group to write, act, direct, shoot and edit a short film, Scrapbook Memories. The project was exhibited at the Summer Show, a public celebration of work by Club members from across the country. Opening in July at London’s prestigious Somerset House, each Club had a dedicated stand to present their collaborative work.

On Sunday 13 July, the Queen’s Hall team took 12 Saturday Club members to London to attend a graduation ceremony at Somerset House.

Seeing their work exhibited alongside Clubs from across the UK was an inspiring experience, giving members the chance to reflect on how far they’d come and share their achievements with a national audience.

Back in Hexham, a final sharing event in September brought together families, friends, and supporters for a screening of the group’s completed films. It was a proud moment for everyone involved, showcasing not only technical skills developed throughout the year, but also the confidence, teamwork, and imagination that defined the Club’s journey.

Below you can enjoy the group’s films too…

Feedback from the young people show taking part in the Film&Screen Satuday club had increased their confidence and creativity and some highlighted that their teamwork, communication and the skill to make friends had also improved.

Applications are now open for our 2025 Film&Screen Saturday Club, running 17 January - 4 July 2026.

The Film&Screen Saturday Club runs with the support of the BFI, awarding National Lottery funding.
