The Future Maker's Project - Edible Props and Breakaway Effects

Led by Trish Mayers, Managing Director of Backstage Builders.

Step into the magic of movie making and stagecraft! In this hands-on workshop, students will dive into the secret science behind theatrical props and learn how everyday materials are transformed into on stage illusions. They'll create edible soil, realistic mouldy bread, and breakaway bottles that smash safely just like in the movies - plus a few surprise effects along the way!

Students will experiment with texture, colour, special effects, and creative problem solving as they uncover the tricks prop makers use to bring stories to life. By the end of the session, they'll not only have made their own props but will see how these skills connect to exciting career paths in theatre, TV and film and the growing creative industry across the North East.

This is messy, imaginative, behind the scenes fun and a brilliant way to inspire the next generation of makers and story tellers.

Tell us something interesting about your career to date:

"I spent 20 years in a call centre and made the move into this role just five years ago!"

What is the best piece of careers advice you have ever received?

"It is never too late to change your path"

Your pathway into your career:

"My pathway into my career has had many twists and turns. I am an example that you don't have to remain in a working environment if it doesn't work for you. My career path has been driven by undiagnosed neurodivergence, and once I found this, I have never been more satisfied and happy with my work."
