Filmmaking: Telling Stories on Screen

Led by Addison Keen, Filmmaker, Youth Arts Facilitator & Charity Trustee

A fast-paced, hands-on introduction to filmmaking. Participants will explore how scenes are built, try out real camera and sound equipment, and work together to create a short sequence. We’ll break down the filmmaking process - from directing and camera work to performance and shot choices - giving students a taste of how screen stories come to life.

Tell us something interesting about your career to date:

"I’ve worked across a mix of community arts, youth theatre and independent film projects - from teaching filmmaking to young people across the North East to producing short films and feature films for Amazon Prime Video and working on CBBC and ITV sets. My work regularly crosses between storytelling, media production, and empowering young creatives to develop their own ideas, both for those who wish to pursue it as a career and for those who use it as a vehicle to develop their personal/transferable skills."

What is the best piece of careers advice you have ever received?

"Start where you are, use what you have, and build from there."

Your pathway into your career:

"I began in youth theatre as a teenager, developed an interest in filmmaking through community projects, and gradually built up skills by making short films, volunteering, and taking on creative opportunities as they arose, which then culminated in me taking Film Practices at Newcastle University. Over time, that led to professional work in arts education, film production and youth engagement."
