Hexham Lantern Parade returns on Friday 13 November, with Queen's Hall Arts revealing the artist behind a spectacular new woodland-inspired lantern that will lead this year's celebrations.

After a break in 2025, the much-loved community event will once again light up the streets of Hexham, presented by Queen's Hall Arts thanks to the generous support of EGGER, with live music from Northern Monkey Brass Band.

Northumberland artist Elaine Porter Nelson has been commissioned to create a new large-scale lantern inspired by Kielder Forest, working alongside local children aged 5–13 through holiday clubs and workshops to bring the creation to life.

With more than 20 years' experience across willow sculpture, lanterns, parade structures and community art, Elaine has worked on events including Amble Lantern Parade, Alnwick Garden Light Parade, Stockton International Riverside Festival and The Light in Durham.

Inspired by the natural world, Elaine's work places community participation at its heart, encouraging people of all ages and abilities to get creative.

Artist Elaine Porter Nelson said: "I am really looking forward to creating a lantern for the Hexham Lantern Parade! This is my favourite kind of winter celebration, using the season to create something beautiful for people to enjoy together.

We are celebrating Kielder Forest with our lantern, bringing a little bit of the forest into the parade. I love the way these events bring people together, get everyone being creative and give us something lovely to look forward to in the darker months."

Adding to the atmosphere will be Northern Monkey Brass Band, bringing an infectious mix of New Orleans funk, brass and percussion to the streets of Hexham. With original music, New Orleans classics and fresh takes on well-known pop songs, the band promises a lively soundtrack as lanterns make their way through the town.

The parade is made possible thanks to the generous support of EGGER, whose longstanding connection to Hexham and commitment to the local community is helping Queen's Hall Arts bring families, artists and residents together for this special celebration.

Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the parade on Friday 13 November, gathering at the Bandstand in Sele Park from 6pm. Families are encouraged to bring their own lanterns to join in the celebrations, using battery-operated lights only. For anyone keen to make their own, a simple how-to guide is available on the Queen's Hall Arts website.
