About Hexham

Voted ‘The Happiest Place To Live’ (2021), Hexham is a beautiful market town in the heart of Northumberland. It sits on the River Tyne, close to Hadrian’s Wall and between the cities of Newcastle and Carlisle.

Hexham itself has a thriving arts and music scene and is home to fantastic organisations like Core Music CIC, a range of independent shops, pubs and restaurants as well as a popular fortnightly Farmer’s Market.

The Forum Cinema is Northumberland’s only full-time independent cinema and screens everything from the latest blockbusters to independent films. Launched in 2019 by Forum, look out for the Tyne Valley Film Festival held annually in March.

Each year Hexham Book Festival attracts national and internationally critically acclaimed writers and speakers with an exciting programme of events and talks.

Founded in AD674, visit Hexham Abbey and take in the peaceful atmosphere, ancient architecture and beautiful stained glass. Step into Northumberland's past with a visit to Hexham Old Gaol and relive important moments from our region's turbulent past.

The town is also ideally located to explore Hadrian's Wall (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Northumberland National Park, the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Kielder Water and Forest Park, the Sill Landscape Discovery Centre and the International Dark Skies Park.
