Dvořák at his most magical
A special concert for the Hexham and District Society as it celebrates its 75th anniversary, 75 years and 5 days after its first one on 5 March 1952.
The Piatti Quartet and pianist Simon Callaghan both have enviable international reputations and are much in demand in the UK and around the world. They visit Hexham this evening with an inspiring programme that brings together three great works of chamber music, balancing the familiar with the rarely heard.
They begin with Vaughan Williams’ first string quartet, a delightful early work showing the influence of the composer’s studies with Ravel.
This is followed by two undisputed masterpieces: Robert Schumann’s Piano Quartet and Dvořák’s second piano quintet. Dvořák was a true master of melody and this quintet has been described as the ‘jewel in the crown’ of his chamber music. A fitting piece for an anniversary celebration and especially in these very talented hands.
