Dr Nigel Fletcher of the Centre for Opposition Studies offers up witty and thought-provoking profiles of the leaders who didn’t make it to No. 10.

A library’s worth of books have been published chronicling the UK’s Prime Ministers, however short or undistinguished their tenure. But what about those who failed to make it to the top of the greasy pole? Leaders of the Opposition are our alternative Prime Ministers, waiting in the wings, eager to move centre stage. Why did they never reach the top job and do they deserve to be remembered only as losers?
