Spufford, Francis Copyright Antonio Olmos

A thrilling tale of murder and mystery in a city where history has run a little differently, from the bestselling author of Golden Hill.

The Costa Prize-winning Spufford’s latest work Cahokia Jazz is a thrilling tale of murder and mystery in a city where history has run a little differently from elsewhere. It’s 1922, and Americans are drinking in speakeasies, dancing to jazz and stepping quickly to the tempo of modern times. Beside the Mississippi, the ancient city of Cahokia lives on its racial divisions held in check. Then a body found on the roof of a skyscraper sparks off a week of bloodshed that will lay bare the city’s secrets to a soundtrack of wailing trumpets and rattling machine-gunfire.
