An award-winning debut that vividly evokes the world of polite Regency English society, Emily Howes’ novel tells the story of Peggy and Molly, the daughters of artist Thomas Gainsborough. The sisters spy on their father while he works, antagonise their mother as she struggles to balance the books and run barefoot through the muddy fields of Suffolk. But Peggy has a secret, her sister has a tendency to forget and to fall into mental confusion. It’s a fact she’s determined nobody else should discover. The Painter’s Daughters explores family dynamics, mental illness, sisterly love, and asks whether one person can truly change the fate of another.
