Tom Stoppard, A Life
Hexham Abbey: Spiegeltent
Tuesday 14 June: 6.30pm
Tickets: £10, £8
In an immensely interesting biography Hermione Lee captures the essential morality of Tom Stoppard.
In her unputdownable biography of Tom Stoppard, Hermione Lee also meditates on the biographer’s task; while deftly analysing a rocket-like talent, still fizzing with energy, she imposes a moving and satisfying shape on his life, from his suppressed Central European Jewish origins to his rediscovery of them in Leopoldstadt; his most recent work. Lee’s gripping narrative draws on unprecedented access to archive material, interviews with family, friends and stars of stage and screen, and long conversations with Stoppard himself, to trace his family’s escape from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia.
Hermoine is interviewed by Illustrated Talk.
