Port Elizabeth, the 1960s: brother and sister Johnnie and Hester Smits have not seen each other in years. Hester left for good when she was a teenager, Johnnie stayed to look after their invalid father.
When Hester returns to claim the birthright she believes is hers, the stage is set for a moving, poetic, punchy drama of sibling rivalry, family and the debts we owe each other, financial and otherwise.
Elysium Theatre Company is a Durham-based company which brings theatre to the North East. ‘Hello And Goodbye’ is the second in an ambitious trilogy of plays by Fugard that played across the region in an acclaimed production in 2019, and will conclude with ‘The Island’ planned for next year. This is their fourth collaboration with Queen’s Hall Arts Centre, Hexham, the others being ‘The River’, ‘Miss Julie’ (winner of Best Revival In The North East 2019 in the British Theatre Guide) and ‘Playland’.
‘Hello And Goodbye’ is also Elysium’s first stage collaboration with the Northern School Of Art in Hartlepool, where the live streamed performance will be staged.
