Well known for his paintings of Olympic Sport and Jazz Music, Dave Barden’s recent work takes its stimulus from frequent visits to Italy, where he and his wife, Ali, have a house.
The rhythms and shapes of arcades, doorways and windows, combined with the rich colour and textures suggested by worn, eroded building fabric, create rich, evocative abstracted structures. Whilst acknowledging the personal significance of this newly discovered ‘Italian’ stimulus, Dave recognises that he is re-visiting some pre-occupations and patterns of response found in earlier work.
The use of grids and tessellations as compositional devices, together with architectural details continue to feature as a strong presence in his paintings.
